Flavors from the volcanic land

Bali is not only known for its breathtaking landscapes, but also for its unique coffee. Grown on volcanic soil, Bali coffee impresses with its mild, fruity aromas and enjoys great popularity worldwide.

The Bali Kintamani coffee

The island's best-known coffee is Bali Kintamani coffee. This Arabica coffee is grown in the Kintamani highlands, which are located between two active volcanoes, Mount Batur and Mount Agung. The volcanic soil and the cooler climate at altitudes of 900 to 1,700 meters give the coffee a unique taste, which is often described as mild, fruity and slightly citrusy.

Another special feature of Kintamani coffee is the traditional method of cultivation. The agricultural system in Bali is organized by the traditional Subak system, whereby plantations are managed according to the specific Subak Abian system. This system plays a particularly important role in the mountainous regions where the valuable Bali Arabica coffee grows. These regions regulate water management, stabilize the soil and protect against landslides, while providing a significant economic resource for farmers. Sustainable agriculture is guided by the principles of the Subak Abian system, which are based on the Hindu concept of Tri Hita Karana: man's relationship with God(Parahyangan), with each other(Pawongan) and with the environment(Palemahan). These principles promote a balance between ecological and cultural values.

The history of coffee in Bali

The history of coffee cultivation on Bali began in the 19th century when the Dutch brought coffee plants from Java to the island. Similar to other Indonesian islands, Bali's fertile volcanic soil proved to be ideal for coffee cultivation. The farmers on Bali initially cultivated Arabica coffee, which developed a special quality due to the high-altitude climate and the nutrient-rich soil.

Challenges and opportunities

As in other regions of Indonesia, coffee cultivation in Bali is facing challenges due to climate change, which is affecting harvest cycles and yields. At the same time, the growing demand for high-quality specialty coffee offers opportunities for Bali's coffee farmers. The focus on organic and sustainable production is another competitive advantage that makes Bali coffee sought after in international markets.
